Welcome to the Flute Tutor Studio

It is so exciting that you are ready to learn to play the flute, or increase in the skills you already have! At The Flute Tutor Studio my aim is to provide each student with instruction designed to meet your personal goals. Whether you want to play flute simply for the pleasure of playing, for the purpose of stimulating mental focus, or you are heavily involved in auditions and performances and want to advance as far as possible in your skill sets, we will work together to set goals for your specific needs.

Getting started

You will need:

  • A flute in good working condition (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Music stand for practice at home
  • Cleaning cloth and rod
  • Metronome (Phone app is fine)
  • Tuner (Phone app is fine)
  • Sheet music and other texts, etc. (Photocopied materials may not be used as a permanent substitute for purchasing printed works)

Lesson time!

We will work on:

  • Proper warm up techniques
  • Tone production
  • Building technical skill though studies and flute repertoire
  • Practicing skill sets for auditions and performances
  • Review audition or performance materials as needed
  • Duets!

Outside of lesson time

Practice, Practice, Practice! No matter what levels you desire to achieve in your playing, consistent practice is vital to making steady progress and gaining maximum benefit from your private lessons.

Minimum amounts that you should be playing your flute –

  • Beginner – 15 to 30 minutes a day, 5 or more days a week
  • Intermediate – 30-45 minutes a day, 5 or more days a week
  • Advanced – 45 minutes to one hour a day, 5 or more days a week
  • Play in a group setting if at all possible*

*Playing in a group, for either performance or pleasure, reinforces what you learn during lesson time. If you are not already in a band, orchestra, or ensemble and need ideas about becoming involved in a group, please ask for the latest information on local performing groups.

Scheduling

Lessons days at Carlton’s Music are Mondays, and Fridays for 30 or 60-minute time slots.

We follow the Polk County School District calendar. Regardless of holidays, the total monthly payment remains the same throughout the year. Some months have 3 weeks of lessons and some have 5. A year’s commitment of lessons should total a minimum of 24 hours of instruction (2 hours per month). Total number of actual sessions per month may vary, depending on holidays or other absences, but you will still receive the previously agreed upon amount of time of instruction.

Students that cannot commit to 2 hrs per month are considered ‘drop-in’ students and will not have a guaranteed space. You may contact me for availability.

Payment Details

Tuition is due at the first scheduled lesson of each month, or no later than the 10th day of the month even if your student will be absent for that lesson.

You may pay in cash, by check, or PayPal subscription (automatically deducted)

  • Make checks payable to Kay Endsley. NSF incurs $40 overdraft fee.
  • PayPal Subscription requires an additional service fee ($4.25 – $8.50)
  • A late fee of $10 will be added to the tuition amount if received after the 10th day of the month.
  • Special payment arrangements (i.e. date of payment, partial payments) can be made when needed, but communication in advance is vital.
  • Preference for scheduling is given to students that remit payment on time consistently.  Non- payment and non-communication by the 10th may result in the loss of your student’s preferred placement on my schedule.

Absences

Call or text me at 281-795-5259 at least 48 hours in advance if you are aware of an unavoidable scheduling conflict. We will reschedule your lesson for another day.

Lessons will not be rescheduled without sufficient notice unless the absence is due to an emergency.

In the event of illness, family emergency, or severe weather, call or text me as soon as you are aware of the need to cancel. We will reschedule your lesson for another day.

Lesson fees are not credited for absences. Absences should be made up and are the responsibility of the parent/student to ask for the next available time slot.

Students that miss, or have to reschedule 3 or more lessons per semester may be asked to adjust their reserved lesson time, especially if your lesson occurs in a high demand time (4-6 PM).

(Please do not come to your lesson if you suspect that you are ill!)
