Lessons at the Flute Tutor

 

Who can learn to play the flute? Anyone! While most of my clientele comes from the public school environment it has been a real joy to be able to also teach private school students, home schooled students, and adults.

I teach primarily from a classical music background. Although helpful concepts from jazz techniques, improvisation, or specific genres of music may be introduced during the lesson, the classical sound seems to be ingrained in my DNA and I focus on traditional flute studies with most of my students.

 

The first order of business while learning flute is to enjoy what you are learning. During our lessons my students and I have a lot of fun! I attempt to teach them to find humor in their mistakes (rather than to allow the mistakes to be a discouragement), and to enjoy the process of overcoming problems with their playing as they learn new skills. While I do want them to master their instruments and the beauty of music, I also want them to have a great time. Learning the flute takes hard work and dedicated practice, but no one ever said we can’t have fun while we do it!

 

Goals

 

During the course of our lessons students will develop technical skills as a musician which allows them to express themselves creatively and musically as well as developing the ability to critically listen to music. They will also acquire skills in performance, practice techniques, setting and realizing goals, and assessment of weekly/quarterly accomplishments.

 

The ability to play an instrument is as much a gift as it is a skill and I want my students to fall in love with the feel of the flute, the vibrations it makes in their hands as they play, and the music that comes out of their instruments. My ultimate goal for them is that they eventually gain the skills needed to become independent musicians, whether they choose to make a career of music or simply play for the enjoyment of the process.

 

Competitions and recitals

 

My students participate in various competitions and recitals throughout the year. I strongly encourage participation in any audition, recital, or competition that the student can handle, but this is not a requirement. My students and I regularly assess what their current goals are and we plan our course of study accordingly. If they are going to compete I want them to be as prepared as possible and we work together for that end result.

 

Practice

 

Yes, all of my students have to practice! One cannot master the flute without practicing. Students are expected to be prepared for their lessons and to be open to suggestions when needed.

 

While I can guide, encourage,  and assess problems, I cannot do the work for the student. We map out the goals together and I assign studies and exercises to strengthen the student’s skills, but unless they actually practice their progress will be stagnant. Students need to realize that as well as learning artistic expression of music they are building muscle tone in the various muscles (lips, tongue, fingers, abdomen) that are used to play flute. They cannot reach the full potential of musical expression without muscle tone and those muscles will not respond correctly unless they are exercised regularly.

 

To aid in practicing I provide a practice plan for students to use.  The students are trained  in the various skills they need to work on according to their personal goals and then a guide is provided to use in their practice sessions. In general, a beginner will need to practice up to 30 minutes 5-7 times a week. Intermediate or advanced need to increase the amount of time to a minimum of 45 minutes.

 

Lesson Content

 

Our lesson sessions will generally consist of proper warm up techniques, tone production, technical studies, and flute repertoire. I will also focus on additional performance material such as school band music when needed.

 

Recitals and Competitions

 

When preparing for recitals or competitions the students are responsible for purchasing their own printed music (flute as well as the accompaniment parts) and for paying their own accompanist. Students will be responsible for working out a schedule for rehearsal, lessons, and performance with the accompanist.

 

A good accompanist plays an important role in the student’s performance. Please contact me before engaging an accompanist. I will be happy to provide a list of approved pianists or guitarists.
